Cleaning fuel

Oil contains sulphur and other impurities, which when emitted can cause environmental harm. It can cause acid rain, harm crops and forest, as well as harming aquatic species.

In 2020 the International Maritime Organization started capping sulphur emissions from ships in order to prevent such harm from happening.

“Desulphurisation” is the process by which sulphur is removed from oil, and so contributing to a cleaner environment.

A significant use of cobalt globally is as part of catalysts in this desulphurisation process.

It is another example of how cobalt contributes to a cleaner world.
