Cobalt and cobalt substances are subject to a wide number of human health, environmental, trade and energy regulations and policies for chemicals in general, as well as to other more specific ones related to the industry sector in which they are used, such as batteries and medical devices.

Resulting assessments, standards and classifications are applied at global, regional, or national level.

The Cobalt Institute aims, through an active contribution to regulations and policies, to promote a sustainable production, trade, use and recycling of cobalt in a business environment that is supportive for its members.
