Risk Assessment

Metals occur naturally

Living things adapt to metals

Metals are essential

While cobalt is an essential element for most forms of life, excessive concentrations can lead to adverse effects.

To ensure its responsible use, Cobalt Institute has conducted research to identify safe concentrations of cobalt which can then inform both industry practices and regulatory authorities about the acceptable uses of cobalt in the materials and products we rely on in our daily lives.

Basic steps of risk assessment

A risk-based approach for chemicals management

  • A risk-based approach looks at the likelihood that an inherent property of a substance (hazard) could occur (exposure).
  • It can incorporate the essential nature of cobalt.
  • It can use information gained from decades of safe handling and use.
  • It can use the best scientific information available.
