PHASE 5 – RECYCLING AND DISPOSAL

PHASE 5

RECYCLING AND DISPOSAL

Cobalt is endlessly recyclable in principle, and materials containing cobalt are increasingly recycled back into the supply chain. It is estimated that 65% of recycled cobalt comes from battery recycling, and it is the value of recoverable cobalt that makes recycling of lithium-ion batteries economically attractive for recyclers. At 24%, the recycling of hard metal scraps is the second-largest secondary source. Some cobalt-containing materials are disposed of as waste due to limited collection, sorting and recycling facilities, although industry continues to undertake initiatives to ensure as much cobalt-containing material as possible is recycled and does not end up in landfills.
