New resource hub on responsible sourcing and production of cobalt

Cobalt is an essential element in many of today’s most important applications, and therefore demand is increasing as is exposure to challenges. This is particularly true for the cobalt supply chain which, due to its complexity, is exposed to multiple responsible sourcing challenges, particularly upstream, including those related to human rights, financial crime, health, safety, and the environment.

With consumers, the media, and society well-aware of these risks, companies that use cobalt need to have confidence in the sustainability of their supply chain. With this in mind, the Cobalt Institute (CI) has launched a new website dedicated to its Cobalt Industry Responsible Assessment Framework (CIRAF): responsiblecobalt.org

“Our downstream users of cobalt are concerned about the sustainability of their supply chains and need assurance that the materials they work with are responsibly sourced and produced,” says CI President, David Weight, who highlighted that “by providing the latest information on CIRAF and its implementation, this website is designed to demonstrate the cobalt industry’s commitment to responsible sourcing and production.”

The new responsiblecobalt.org website is an information hub relating to responsible cobalt and the CIRAF initiative. It is regularly updated with the latest news and contains a range of relevant interviews and articles. It also showcases Cobalt Institute members implementing best practices in responsible production and sourcing.

About CIRAF

The Cobalt Industry Responsible Assessment Framework (CIRAF) was created to help the cobalt value chain take a proactive approach to answering the sustainability concerns of customers and stakeholders. A voluntary management tool available to every stage of the cobalt supply chain, CIRAF is not a standard or a certification but a risk management and reporting framework to help companies reinforce their commitment to responsible production and sourcing.

About the Cobalt Institute

The Cobalt Institute (CI) is a non-profit trade association composed of producers, users, recyclers, and traders of cobalt. It promotes the sustainable and responsible production and use of cobalt in all its forms and acts as a knowledge centre for governments, agencies, industry, the media and the public on all matters concerning cobalt, an essential element to achieve energy transition.
